Very early vase made in Pecs, Hungary during the managerial period of Wilmos / Vilmos Zsolnay during the 2nd half of the 19th century.

Measures approx 2 3/4 inches high.

Main body is bulging, round shape with a slender double gourd neck and rim. Body is ivory-coloured with polychrome decoration depicting a host of scrolling flowers and foliage and a wonderful heart floating in the middle. The style of painting combines Hungarian folklore traditional art themes and style, with Islamic (Iznik) decoration. A host of colours are used - the heart alone combines pale pink, salmon, puce, grey-green and cream and is surrounded by radiating bright yellow leaf-like rays. There are traces of gold highlights, most of which have worn away.

The vase is marked in blue underglaze underneath with the 5-spire Zsolnay mark, Zsolnay PECS with a sceptre like the KPM scepter mark and letters on a banner. The letters TJM mean the 3 Zsolnay-children: Teriz (Theresa, 1846-1944), Jzlia (Julia, 1856-1950) and Miklss (Nicolas, 1857-1922). A handpainted symbol on one side and impressed number 1480. This was a very early mark, used 1878 - 1900. The number 1840 dates the model to the early part of 1885 - 1887.

condition is generally good with two very small chips on the bottom rim. The glaze is crazed as can be seen magnified in the 'photos.

THank you to "Friendly" for the information on the 3initials mark.
