WILLIAMS, ALPHEUS S.
(1810 - 1878) Union brigadier general who assumed command of Mansfield's corps after the later was wounded at Antietam and led troops during Sherman's March to the Sea. War-date A.E.S. ""A. S. Williams"" adding rank, Stafford C. H., Mar., 7, 1863, in full: ""Capt. McGilvery is well known as a very gallant officer. I have had very little opportunity to see the condition of his battery and to know his skill as an officer. The recommendation of Gen'l. Greene is however worthy of all credit and I have no hesitation in concurring in his recommendation"". Written on verso of a copy letter from General George Greene 2pp. 4to., Aquia Creek Landing, March 4, 1863 to the governor of Maine recommending Capt. McGilvery for promotion, in part: ""àat the battle of Cedar Mountainàhis battery occupied a position on the extreme left of Gen'l. Banks line, exposed to the fire of the batteries of the insurgentsàunder severe loss in men and horses from the concentrated fire of the enemy he kept his guns in constant action, until he was ordered to retireàI feel confident that Captain McGilvery will justify by his conduct any confidence you may repose in him by his promotionà"". Very good.
