Wounded at Murfreesboro and Perryville, he was an active member of Joseph Wheeler’s Cavalry Corps. <b>War-date</b> LS as Brig Gen Commanding, 1p, 8vo, Headquarters of Allen’s Cavalry Div [SC], Feb 23, 1865. On lined blue paper to Lt. Hudson, AAAG, regarding a recently captured prisoner. in full, “<i>I have the honor to respectfully forward a prisoner captured on the Black-stock road two miles from the rail-road, by Lt. Stewart, 3d. Ala. Cav.</i>..” Boldly signed. Somewhat irregular bottom edge; ink in text slightly uneven; o/w VG. At the time Allen was involved in opposing the Federal Carolinas Campaign, which was the final victorious Union push north from Georgia. Sherman’s forces were approaching the border between South and North Carolina, and Lee had placed Gen. Joseph Johnston in command of Confederate troops in the southeast, hoping that the scattered forces could be united. Allen had been appointed Brig. General just a year earlier, and in less that two weeks he would be promoted to Major General.</span></p>
