<hr align=left size=5 width=33% color=#778899>(1888-1966). Vice Admiral, USN; CincPac chief during World War II aboard the flag ship of the Pacific Fleet, USS<i> Pennsylvania</i> at Pearl Harbor. Collection of war-date autographs and artifacts attractively displayed within double-matted shadow box frame. Included is a TLS “<i>W W Smith</i>,” 1p, 8vo, Pearl Harbor, Oct 10, 1941. To William R. Ward, MD, a friend, expressing his appreciation for congratulatory letter “<i>on my selection for promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral.</i>..” Smith provides news of his family, and adds, “<i>What the future holds in the Pacific no one can say. We have here a very efficient and hard-working Fleet, and if the worst should come I know it will give a good account of itself.</i>..” Also, a Newark newspaper article, Dec 9, 1941, quoting from this letter. Plus an SP, b/w, overall approx 6"x8" seated portrait in uniform behind his desk. Boldly signed, adding “<i>Vice Admiral USN ComServPac 1945</i>” in bottom white border. Additionally, present are his three-star Vice-Admiral insignia and row of three campaign and service ribbons with three-star insignia, each mounted within the display near his image. Beside his image is a printed photograph of the USS<i> Pennsylvania</i> as it “Steams Under Brooklyn Bridge.” Plus TLS, Jun 12, 1974, from a collector requesting a personal memento and an ALS by Smith’s wife, Elizabeth, responding. She advises that her husband died in 1966, adding however, “<i>in a small box which I am sending to you, there are a few small trinkets and signed photograph.</i>..” Very nice.
