Army scout, lawman, state senator and buffalo hunter who was one of “The Three Guardsmen” who rid the Oklahoma Territory of the Doolin gang and other outlaws. Partly printed DS “<i>Wm Tilghman</i>,” 1p, oblong 8vo, Guthrie, OK, Nov 15, 1907. Removed from larger document. Receipt for expenses of $13.80 paid to Tilghman by US Marshal John R. Abernathy and drawn on Guthrie National Bank. Boldly signed as Field Deputy Marshal. Two ½" tears a bottom edge with no paper loss of negligible affect; scuff marks in right margin; o/w VG. As a buffalo hunter, Tilghman is said to have killed 4,000 buffalo in one year. In one of his more than seven recorded gunfights, he wounded Clay Allison. He was deputy sheriff under Bat Masterson and chief of police for Oklahoma City. Bat Masterson called him ‘the greatest of us all,’ and he is generally considered the best. He is said to have been paid more reward money than any other law officer.
