WILLIAM PHILLIPS</b> (1731? - 1781) British general who served as second in command to John Burgoyne, also served as commander of the Convention Army when Burgoyne was paroled, noted for his tremendous arrogance. A.L.S. "<i>W Phillips</i>" as prisoner of war, 1p. 4to., "<i>Colonel Carter's House</i>", May 27, 1779, in part: "<i>...Commissary Hoaksley having reported to me the arrival of his stores at Charlottesville, I am to bet you will be pleased to signify to me if I may give my orders for these publick stores to be distributed and sold to the Troops of Convention...</i>". A few tears which affect several words, light soiling, otherwise very good condition.<b>$500-700</b>
