WILLIAM MURRAY, FIRST EARL OF MANSFIELD
(1705-1793) British politician and jurist, known for his reform of English law and best remembered for his decision in Somersett's case, where he held that slavery was unlawful in England. Manuscript D.S. 1p. oblong lg. 4to., Sept. 24, 1808, a commission of George Abercromby to be a Lieutenant Colonel in the local militia. Signed "Mansfield" at conclusion. Retains much of the red-wax seal at bottom right. Folds, light staining, very good condition.
