WILLIAM MCKINLEY
(1843 - 1901) Twenty-fifth President of the United States, acquired Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and Hawaii, assassinated. Partly-printed D.S. "William McKinley" as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Dec. 24, 1898, the appointment of WILLIAM M. WHERRY as Colonel of Infantry, co-signed by Secretary of War RUSSELL A. ALGER. Docket at top right blurred by water, one crease, else very boldly signed and near fine. William M. Wherry (1836-1918) was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Wilson's Creek on Aug. 10, 1861, where he "displayed conspicuous coolness and heroism in rallying troops that were recoiling under heavy fire" while serving as a First Lieutenant of Co. D, 3rd Reserve Missouri Infantry.
