In full, “<i>An honest, courageous and unselfish maintenance of the right, as conscientiously believed, in respect to public matters, is patriotism</i>.” Boldly penned and signed adding “<i>10 June 1891 Petersburg Va</i>.” Expertly inlaid; left edge evidences removal from binding; o/w Fine. Postwar Mahone returned to his former occupation as president of the Atlantic Mississippi & Ohio Railroad and served as senator from Virginia (1880-87). Like Longstreet before him, he switched party affiliation from Democrat to Republican.</span></p>
