After his graduation from high school in 1929, he enrolled in the Dallas Art Institute under Olin Travis and Thomas Stell.

The early 1930s brought local and regional recognition for William Lester. In the mid-1930s to early 1940s, Lester gained national attention for his painting. It is in this early formative period that Lester produced his most desirable paintings. Three characteristics tend to define William Lester's best work: Regionalist style, surreal character, and expressionistic tone. This large-scale painting contains all three.

The subject of this painting is a Hill Country river at flood stage. The monumental rock forms and the movement of the rushing water are emphasized. The rocks seem chiseled rather than painted. The palette of the painting derived from the earthy colors of the Texas soil. Lester embraces the harshness of the land, distills it into its elemental forms, and turns the whole into a thing of desolate and awesome beauty.

Provenance:
Estate of William Lester
Collection of James and Kimel Baker

Condition Report: Scattered inpainting over surface.
