WILLIAM J. SLIM
(1891 - 1970) British lieutenant general, 13th Governor-General of Australia. Slim led the 14th Army, the so-called "forgotten army", in the Burma campaign. His brilliant defensive actions while surrounded by the Japanese, and his bold incursions into Burma culminating in the capture of Rangoon, did much to eliminate the Japanese grip on Southeast Asia. Scarce T.L.S. "Slim" with holograph salutation and subscription on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., London, May 13, 1964. In part: "...I am quite happy that you should quote from my books in your dictionary of military and naval quotations. As far as the quotation '...the guns, thank God, the guns' is concerned, I am almost sure it is from Kipling...". File holes, else fine.

Estimate: $300 - 400.
