His first novel and the one most identified with him, <i>Lord of the Flies</i>, 243pp, 8vo, Coward-McCann, NY, 1962 edition, first published in 1954. Boldly signed on half-title page. Cloth cover evidences general light soiling; occasional light stains; o/w VG/Fine example. Convinced of the inherent barbarism of mankind, Golding was deeply influenced by his experience in World War II, which provided the driving motivation for this book and others that followed.</span></p>

1. Auction Catalogue No. 19 is a Mail, Fax, Phone, Email and
Internet Live Bid Auction and is conducted under the laws of the State
of West Virginia by Gil Griggs, Licensee of Charleston, W. V. License
No. 002.
2. Absentee bid closing date is April 5th, 2002, 10:00 PM EST.
3. There is a 15% Buyer’s Premium charged on the final hammer price
of each lot. An additional 2½% Premium will be added to any lots
purchased through ebayliveauctions.com.
4. The Auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid for any
reason.

6. In the event of duplicate high bids, the earliest bid received
will be the winner.
