WILLIAM ELLERY
(1727 - 1820) Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Ellery was a prominent Rhode Island lawyer who represented the state in the Continental Congress and in the proceedings leading the the signing of the Declaration of Independence. A.D.S. "Wm. Ellery" in the text, a lengthy docket on the verso of an A.L.S. of one "H. Ward", 1p. 8vo., Providence, Mar. 13, 1786 in which Ward sends Ellery his commission as Chief Justice of the Superior Court, along with the "Form of Oath" required to be completed by Ellery. On the verso, Ellery dockets the letter: "H. Ward Secry letter which inclosed W. Ellery's Comm'n as Chief Just: Sup. Court dated Mar. 3d. - 1786 - W.E. incloses herein a Certif. of his election as a deputy of the Town of Newport in 1782". Lightly toned in one small area, else very good.
