WILLIAM E. DOSTER: (1837-1919) Union brevet brigadier general who was a lieut. colonel in the 4th Penn. Cav. and provost marshal of the District of Columbia. A good Gettysburg content A.L.S. "W. E. Doster" 2pp. 4to., Bethlehem, Pa., Aug. 28, 1886, concerning setting the record straight for Gettysburg's chief historian John B. Bachelder on the movements of Doster's regiment during the battle of Gettysburg, in part: "...Many thanks for your reminiscences. So far as they go they confirm my own recollections and will be of great use to use in...report to Colonel Bachelder of our movements at Gettysburg...as you suggest a report including our movements from the time we left Fairfax would be very interesting...the same movements from a Confederate standpoint have been written out by Major McClellan a.a.g. gen. to Gen. J.E.B. Stuart, who by the way was at the last reunion, and excited a good deal of amusement in hunting for a Spring house on Rummels' farm, which figures in his book, as an instance of Rebel self denial, but which the Rummels' said never existed. I had occasion also to [?] him on his denying that our regiment captured a cannon at Middleburg, in his book, and to remind him that his account of the spring house, might be equally reliable. All of which he took good naturally. It is a pity someone does not write the history of our cavalry from beginning to end. When I get ready for Col. B. I will let you know. The correspondence I have had with Col. Curtis of the 2nd Mass. also helps to establish our positions...". Negligible paper loss from ink erosion, else very good. $400-600
