American Admiral of the Fleet; Chief of Staff to Franklin Roosevelt, presiding over the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Offered is his Navy Officer’s Sword, Lot 349, donated to the Navy Relief Fund Auction. Accompanied by auction ticket, boldly signed at bottom margin; and b/w 8"x10" portrait in uniform. This beautiful presentation sword displays the hallmark of “Herman Cohn, Brooklyn, N.Y.” The blade, 29½"in length, with single fuller is ornately etched with floral sprays and naval designs beneath a ricasso with hallmark on obverse. The grip is covered with sharkskin wrapped with twisted gold wire beneath gilt pommel with eagle design. A gold bullion tassel is knotted at top of dolphin design gilt knuckle bow and irregular oval counter guard featuring acorn and oak leaf design on reverse. The leather and brass scabbard is decorated with naval and leaf designs on metal parts with two carrying rings and dolphin design drag. The throat is etched “William D. Leahy” on reverse and with foul anchor on obverse. An extraordinary memento from the first US Fleet Admiral.</span></p>
