WILLIAM CALLCOTT KNELL (British, 1830-1876) PAIR OF SHIPPING SCENES. Both large oil on canvas scenes are identically housed in gesso decorated period frames. 1) Scene shows five boats off a coastal city with large wharfs and buildings. The central ship has five men lowering a large net with barrel buoys. A rowboat with two men is seen attached to other end of nets. Three large vessels in full sail are seen elsewhere. Signed lower left “W C Knell”. There is an original partial penned label to back which indicates artist and title. 2) Scene shows six boats off coast line with windmill and town. People are seen walking on grassy shoreline which is reinforced with wood posts. A large fishing vessel with five men aboard is drawing up a net which has attached to a rowboat with four men, all in rough seas. Other boats are seen around in background. Signed lower left “W C Knell”. SIZES: 32” x 52”. CONDITION: Relined, generally very good with some inpainting and restoration. 9-27277
