WILLIAM BROWNE
(1737-1802) American politician, the grandson of William Burnet who for many years served as a representative of Salem, Mass. Banished for Loyalist leanings in in 1776 and remanded to London, he was named Governor of Bermuda in 1781. Uncommon A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., London, Sept. 2, 1795, to Mrs. Murray, in part: "...At the request of your amiable daughter I inclose herein a bond given to your late husband by Phineas and Joshua Upham...She advised me at the same time to acquaint you 'if I think an application by yourself to the Lords of the Treasury for an annual allowance in consideration of Colonel Murray's [?] in America would be successful.' I entirely agree with her, that it would be perfectly just...and ought to prevail; but, from the opportunities I have had of being acquainted with the sentiments of Government upon the subject, in similar cases, I am clearly of opinion, and therefore I do not hesitate to assure you in a friendly, but decided, manner, that it would give you a deal of trouble and vexation, and would finally be fruitless...". Loss on integral address leaf from opening, otherwise very good.
