<hr align=left size=5 width=33% color=#778899>(1792-1875). American financier; son of fur trader and capitalist John Jacob Astor (1763–1848); founder of Astor Library. Educated in Germany, he was associated with his father in business after 1818. Later called the landlord of New York, he also inherited money from his uncle, Henry Astor, and left an immense fortune. ALS, 1¼pp, 12mo, New York, Feb 14, 1850. Astor writes to industrailist <b>Erastus Corning</b> (1794-1872), founder of the NY Central Railroad, in Albany, “<i>I have your favor of the 12th inst. enclosing a check for Thirty five thousand seven hundred twenty two dollars to pay your Mr. Paiges bond to my late father also a letter from Mr. Paige. I observe that you and Mr. Paige are willing to continue the loan for one year more; the interest pble. half yearly—My co-executor & self are willing to continue the loan as you propose, making the interest payable ½ yearly— Please inform me if I shall return you the check</i>...” Boldly penned and signed as “<i>Executor</i>.” Light general toning; light vertical crease away from signature; else Fine.
