WILDE, OSCAR
(1854 - 1900) Irish poet, wit and dramatist and author of The Importance of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Fine and rare A.Q.S. 1p. 8vo., Paris, Feb. 1898, in full: "Yours without grief or passion. Oscar Wilde Paris, Feby. 98". Tried and convicted in 1895 for homosexual practices, Wilde endured a harrowing term of two years with hard labor at Reading Gaol before being released in 1897. Physically, spiritually, and financially destitute, he retired to Paris where he lived his remaining days in despair and poverty. Boldly penned, tape remnant to top edge and bit of soiling, easily matted out. Along with a mounted signature of EDWARD CARSON, solicitor for the Marquess of Queensberry, who prosecuted Wilde in 1895, and a 7" x 9" b/w copy portrait of Wilde, ideal for framing.
