WHOLE PLATE AMBROTYPE OF A STEAMBOAT. Anonymous, whole plate ambrotype of the sidewheel steamboat Kate Frisbee. The Frisbee was built in the Wm. McFall yards at California, PA in 1853 for Capt. R.W. Frisbee and named for a daughter. Originally shipped "knocked down" to New Orleans for a California route, plans changed, and she ran various routes out of Memphis, including Friar's Point, Laconia and Concordia, La. Dismantled in 1861 when her engines went to the steamer "Louisville." This image of the "Frisbee" probably taken on the Mississippi, her paddlebox with her name and "Memphis and Napoleon Mail Packet" and "Helena, Friars Point and Wea..." visible on board band at the top of the Texas deck. An exceptionally rare image, and desirable in spite of its condition. In original 10 x 12" oval gilt frame, the plate suffers from considerable flaking and spidering. Not examined out of frame.
