"A fine and very interesting D.S., a scroll measuring 8 1/2"" x 132"" (11 feet!), New York, Dec. 17, 1868, a petition requesting that the New York Police Commissioner Thomas C. Acton not resign his post ""...in the interest of good government and order..."", and noting his ""...prompt decision and action in emergencies, and we feel that we cannot hope that a successor would be found who could fill your place..."" . The signatures added to the petition form a veritable who's who of New York city business at the time, and include: PETER COOPER, CYRUS FIELD, JAY COOKE (signing as ""Jay Cooke Co.""), CHARLES LOUIS TIFFANY (""Tiffany & Co.""), JOSEPH H. CHOATE (prosecuted the Tweed Ring), THEODORE ROOSEVELT (Senior), MARSHALL O. ROBERTS, JOHN J. ASTOR, II, and more. Other notables include numerous insurance companies and other major businesses, including Brooks Brothers, Adams Express Co., National Express Co., Lord & Taylor, Astor House Hotel, Fifth Avenue Hotel and many others. Accompanied by a clipping of the petition as it appeared in a newspaper at the time. Thomas C. Acton was captain of the Metropolitan Police Department during the Draft Riots of 1863 and during that period assumed the responsibility of Police Commissioner due to the fact that the regular Commissioner John A. Kennedy was beaten senseless by rioters. Scroll is backed with linen, fold splits where separate sheets were pasted to from scroll. A truly unique item, in very good condition." 2485 A fine and very interesting D.S., a scroll measuring 8 1/2"" x 132"" (11 feet!), New York, Dec. 17, 1868, a petition requesting that the New York Police Commissioner Thomas C.
