A group of three documents with the signatures of and/or referencing Ambrose Whittelsey, Herkiah Whittelsey, and Nathan Whittelsey, along with others: 1. WHITTELSEY, AMBROSE. Single-sheet Connecticut deed/land transfer document, writing on both sides, remnant wax seal. Signed by Ambrose Whittelsey of Saybrook, August 16, 1797, acknowledging the payment of fifteen hundred dollars from Jacq(?) Clerget St. Leger of New London (with his signature on return address). References land tracts of Nathaniel Sanford and John Whittelsey. Also signed by: Jeremiah Lord; Timothy Starke, Justice of the Peace; and Samuel Tully (1800). 12 1/2in. x 7 3/4in. Condition: The bottom half of document is detached; two vertical and three horizontal folds; fold tears, including three 2-in. tears at the bottom (nearly detached); edge tears; toning and foxing.   2. TULLY, JOHN; and MURROCK, JOHN. Single-sheet printed legal summons with handwritten entries, inscribed on both sides. The summons for Dan(iel?)? Post(?) Gunn(?) of Saybrook for a debt dispute, issued to the Sheriff of the County of New London, on behalf of plaintiff Nathan Whittelsey, August 1765. Signed by John Murrock, Justice (of the) Peace, and John Tully, Justice of the Peace; also appears to have Whittelsey's signature at margin. 4 1/2in. x 6 1/2in. Condition: One vertical and three horizontal folds; 1/4-in. hole; fold tears; edge tears/folds; toning, foxing/old dampstains. 3. TULLY, JOHN. Single-sheet bill stub issued to Herkiah Whittelsey Esq. by Elias Tully, Treasury of Town, June 20, 1768. Requesting payment to John Shipman Esq. (to be paid to Tully) of ten shillings and three pence. Inscribed on one side, sums on the other. 2 1/4in. x 8 1/4in. Condition: Four vertical folds; approx. 1 3/4in. tear at center; small hole; edge tears/folds; toning, soiling. PLEASE NOTE: THE DOCUMENTS ARE TONED/DARKENED WITH AGE; IMAGES MAY APPEAR LIGHTER ON DIFFERENT SCREENS. This lot and the other Chapman-related items offered in this sale were part of a collection of papers and ephemera related to the family of Edward Mortimer Chapman (1862-1952), a Connecticut pastor, academic, and author, and a descendant of Robert Chapman, one of the first settlers of Saybrook, Connecticut (c. 1635).
