RIFLE 2ND STYLE. Cal. 69. S# 8251. Bbl. 34" w/ long range rear sight & lg. bayonet lug on right side of muzzle is held by 2 spring retained iron bands. Oct. rear portion of bbl. is stamped "1864" & w/ an anchor on top. "V", "P", & eagle proofs are on top left flat. S# on tang was meant to match individually hand fitted saber bayonet produced by Collins. 1861 Type lock is stamped w/ an eagle over "U.S." in front of hammer & the date "1864" on tail. "WHITNEY-VILLE" is at bottom front of lockplate. Walnut stock w/ inspector's initials "FCW" is iron mounted, trigger guard having finger spur. "US" is on buttplate tang. A correct iron ramrod w/ lg. head is present. CONDITION: very good to fine. Bbl. retains a good portion of what may be it's original bright polish w/ some minor staining & flecking. Lock has traces of faded case color & shows light cleaning. Stock retains most of an old oil finish & shows some scraping & sanding. Sharp edges slightly rounded. Inspector's cartouche somewhat softened. Bore is fine w/ some light frosting. Lock is crisp. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (01-20480/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
