(1824 - 1865) Confederate major general who was in command of Fort Fisher when attacked by Federal forces. He was mortally wounded there and died as a prisoner of war. Rare war-date A.L.S. to General Braxton Bragg concerning the forces at Wilmington, 1p., 4to., [n.p.] March 24, 1864, in part: "...I have written to General Cooper urging the consolidation of [?] battalion and unattached companies of heavy artillery into one regiment or larger…General Martin, adjt. gen'l. of N. C...is fully aware of their status and present condition [and] strongly urges their consolidation…". Signed boldly "W. W. Whiting Maj. Gen.". Very good.
