WESTINGHOUSE, GEORGE
(1846 - 1914) American inventor and industrialist who was chiefly responsible for the adoption of alternating current for electric power transmission in the United States. Good content T.L.S. "Geo. Westinghouse" on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., Lenox, Mass., Sep. 18, 1913 to Navy Capt. G. E. Burd who was associated with America's submarine development. In part: "…Mr. Herr….is working up a plan of machinery which could be placed in the NORTH DAKOTA, if it should be desired in the near future to supplant the present Curtis turbines…The NEPTUNE machinery now under construction is giving us a very splendid opportunity to perfect our plans for marine machinery, not only main engines and gears, but also auxiliaries…". Westinghouse steam turbines were widely used for propulsion of both merchant and naval vessels. The collier USS NEPTUNE was a landmark naval vessel, the first to be outfitted with Westinghouse's marine reduction-geared turbine drive which would soon be installed in all new Navy ships. Very good.
