WELSH, THOMAS
(1824 - 1863) Union brigadier general who commanded a brigade at South Mountain and Sharpsburg, commanded the 45th Pa. at Fredericksburg, contracted a fatal case of malaria before Vicksburg. Excessively rare war-date A.D.S. "Thos. Welsh" with initialed postscript as colonel, 3+pp. 4to., "Camp opposite Fredericksburg", Jan. 27, 1863 to his wife. In part: "…I was much pained at the removal of General Burnside - he and Rosecrans and Butler - are the only generals in our whole Army in whom I have full confidence - they are loyal & honest. Hooker, Sumner, Franklin, Porter & the others are all tarred with one stick - they are selfish enough to sacrifice Army & Country for their own aggrandizement…Hooker is like Geary & Birney - all gas…for the sake of our good old country we will give him or any other commander our hearty support…I suppose the President thinks it best to have some good Colonels…I would love dearly to see you and the children. Kiss all of them for Papa…". Bottom of second page trimmed but costing no text, folds, light toning, overall very good. This is the first Welsh document to come to our hands.
