WEITZEL, GODFREY
(1835 - 1884) Union major general who commanded a division at Port Hudson and a corps during the Petersburg and Appomattox campaigns. War-date A.E.S. "G. Weitzel" adding rank, writing eight lines, in part: "…I heartily endorse the within recommendations…". On verso of A.L.S by ROBERT B. MERRITT as colonel of the 75th New York, 3pp. 4to., "Head Qrs. 75th N. Y. Vols., Camp Stevens, La., Jan. 19, 1863, to the adjutant general of New York, concerning the recommendation of several members of that regiment for promotion. Included in the list for promotion are: George D. Robinson who later commanded a black regiment and was made a brevet brigadier general, Luther Hutchinson who was KIA at Port Hudson, La., June 14, 1863, William H. Root who became a POW at Sabine Pass, Tx., Sept. 8, 1863, and Francis A. Hopping who became a POW at Winchester, Va., Sept. 19, 1864. Very good.
