WEHRPASS OF A PENAL BATTALION SOLDIER
Wehrpass of Unteroffizier Georg Kallart of 1./Festungs Inf. Batt. XIII/999, a punishment battalion established for those soldiers convicted of serious crimes. Kallart was a mason from Deuringen who was born in 1919. He joined a reserve infantry unit in Augsburg in 1939 and served in France, Leningrad, and elsewhere in the east until 1943. Somewhere along the way, Kallart committed some crime for which he was ordered punished and, following a quick marriage and a few days leave, he was sent on Aug. 12, 1944 to a penal battalion to serve for three months. Batt. XIII was at that time stationed on the Greek island of Samos, and following his punishment, Kallart was reduced in rank. On Jan. 30, 1945 this Wehrpass was cancelled and a new one was issued to Kallart. With related documents.
