(1782 - 1852) American lawyer and statesman who verbally jousted with Calhoun in the Senate and later supported Clay's compromise measures on slavery. An interesting group consisting of five pieces including two clipped signatures on small slips adding ""U.S. Senate"" on each; an A.N.S. 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.] praising the character of one Mr. Ketchum; A.N.S. signed in the third person, 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Dec. 23, n.y. requesting that the recipient endorse a certificate; as well as a curious 1p. 4to., undated manuscript in an unknown hand quoting Webster's announcement of the election of John Quincy Adams by congress in 1825! The document reads in full: ""Mr. Webster then rose and said -- 'Mr Speaker -- The tellers of the votes, at this table, have proceeded to count the ballots contained in the box set before the. The result they find to be; that there are, For John Quincy Adams of Massachusetts -- 13. votes For Andrew Jackson of Tennessee -- 7 votes For Mr. H. Crawford of Georgia -- 4 votes."" All pieces bear some wear, usual folds, otherwise in very good condition. Five pieces.
