<b>879. DANIEL WEBSTER </b>(1782 - 1852) American lawyer and statesman who verbally jousted with Calhoun in the Senate and later supported Clay's compromise measures on slavery. A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Washington, June 12, 1849 to his wife Caroline, concerning family matters, the weather, some gossip, and so on. Webster rather snootily closes his letter<i>: "Mrs. Webster I hear nothing from home. This is not a day for Boston lettuce</i>". Old archival tape repairs to two folds on first page, otherwise overall very good. Sold with an 1878 A.N.S. of his wife <b>CAROLINE WEBSTER</b> sending a collector this letter.
