WAYNE, ANTHONY
(1745 - 1796) ""Mad Anthony"", American Revolutionary brigadier general who distinguished himself at Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and in the brilliant capture of the British garrison at Stony Point. A.L.S. 3pp. 4to., Richmond, Ga., June 18, 1786, to Edward Pennam writing in part: ""àMajor Pierce presented your Statement of the bills drawn by me on Wilhelm & Jan Willnks Merchants in Amstermam in Favor of Mr. James Pennman the 28 th Sept. 1785 for 11,000 florins - but the great disappointment I have experienced at the hands of the Willinks puts it out of my power at present to replace them- you will please to recollect that I put into your hands the letters upon which grounded my expectations of having my bills duly honored & that after two or three days consideratino you were of the Opinion that under this Our [?] present circumstances I had sufficient ground to draw - we have been both disappointed - I shall as soon as in my power endeavor to pay the debt now contracted with you being more anxious if possible to pay than you to receive it but it will require some reasonable time especially as the Willinks keep possession of my Bonds on my Wanesborough Estate not withstanding they have protected my bills as a conduct as unaccountable, as they should protect them allà"". As a reward for his service in the Southern campaigns during the war, the state of Georgia granted Wayne an 800 acre rice plantation. Borrowing from Dutch creditors, he made an attempt at improving the estate but ultimately was unable to cover his debts. His creditors eventually foreclosed on the plantation, and Wayne returned to Pennsylvania and public life. Usual folds, otherwise very good condition.
