(1745 - 1796) "Mad Anthony", American Revolutionary brigadier general who distinguished himself at Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and in the brilliant capture of the British garrison at Stony Point. Good financial content A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Savannah, June 2, 1791 to Signer Edward Rutledge explaining that he has "…assign'd over to Mr. Adam Tunno three Bonds now in your possession of Mr. Ed: Penman to me dated the ____ 1791 for Four Hundred pounds Sterling each payable upon the Exchange of London (respectively) on the 1st day of March 1794 - 1795 & 1796 with Interest upon the same yearly & every year, which Bonds you will please to deliver into the hands of the said Mr. Adam Tunno, or order, on or before the 1st. day of Octr. next, upon his depositing with you a general release of all & every debt and demand against me & On Condition that Saml. Potts Esqr. of London shall satisfy the said Ed: Penman on or before the sd. 1st. day of Octr…" As a reward for his service in the Southern campaigns during the war, the state of Georgia granted him an 800 acre rice plantation. Borrowing from Dutch creditors, he made an attempt at improving the estate. Ultimately, he was unable to cover his debts and his creditors were eventually forced to foreclose on the plantation, and Wayne returned to Pennsylvania and public life. Creased, but otherwise in very good condition.
