[WASHINGTON, GEORGE]
(1732 - 1799) First President of the United States and commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. An interesting letter relative to the construction of the Washington Monument, written by Lemuel Blake, the Recording Secretary of the Trustees of the Washington Monument Association, 1p. 4to., Boston, June 24, 1826, to Supreme Court Justice JOSEPH STORY, in full: "...A meeting of the Trustee of the Washington Monument Association will be holden on Monday next, at 11 o'clock, at the Academy's Room, in the Boston Athenaeum, to determine where the Monument shall be placed...". The construction of a monument to honor the work of George Washington was first considered by Congress in 1783, although for the next three decades, no action was taken. In 1833, the Washington Monument Society was officially created, and work finally began on the structure in 1848, to be completed in 1885. A neat letter from the early days of the history of the monument, matted with a contemporary portrait of the Monument and ready to frame. A bit of splitting along folds, otherwise very good.
