HARDING TLS as President, 1p, 8vo, Washington, DC, May 1, 1923. On White House letterhead to Col. John Hays Hammond in Washington, responding to his letter “in behalf of former Senator DuBois, of Idaho. I shall certainly keep in mind the friendly things I said to you when you called in his behalf. I am instituting inquiry now as to the situation relating to the Boundary Commission...” Boldly signed three months before his death. Mounted. Minor stain at top edge; o/w VG/Fine. John Hays Hammond (1855-1937) was an entrepreneurial mining engineer, diplomat, and a cofounder with Cecil Rhodes of the King Solomon Mines in South Africa. He had moved to Washington in 1908 to be a ‘power behind the throne.’ After Harding died, Coolidge appointed Fred Thomas DuBois (1951-1930) to the International Joint Commission to prevent disputes regarding the use of the boundary waters between the United States and Canada. This letter apparently references the formation of this commission.
