WARCLUB, APACHE, LATE 19TH CENTURY
WARCLUB, APACHE, LATE 19TH CENTURY. Owner states that this war club is attributed to Geronimo by Moon and his family". Flexed-head clubs such as this were commonly constructed by encasing the handle and stone within the skin of a cow tail, leaving the curly tassel at the butt end. A section of hide was left between the head and handle to permit the head to flex. Plains Indians made many war clubs that were smaller than true weapons for sale to the outside. Frequently they decorated the clubs with beadwork such as on this example. Attached to handle is an old tag, which reads, "Geronimo, Ft. Sill, OK". Size: Overall length 30", club proper 18-3/4". CONDITION: Loose section of hide between head and handle stabilized with glue, general surface soiling, beadwork entirely intact. 4-55213 (2,000-4,000)"
