WAR OF 1812 ERA WILLIAM BARTLETT CARVED POWDER
HORN. Horn measures approx. 13 1/8" in length. This horn was engraved in 2 periods. It was engraved during the War of 1812 w/ exemplary circular engravings followed by a subsequent engraving likely by a relative in 1844. The initial carving consists of 3 distinct circular engravings. 1 Carving has a central American eagle w/ a ribbon in his beak that reads, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. Encircling the eagle are the words, “WHERE LIBERTY DWELLS THERE IS M(Y) (C)OUNTRY”. The second carving has a central clock w/ Roman numerals w/ the hands at 2 o’clock. Encircling the clock are the words, “WE MET THE ENEMY AND THEY ARE OU(RS) (O.H. P)ERRY”. These were the words uttered by Olive Hazard Perry after his famous War of 1812 Naval victory. The 2 o’clock time refers to when the battle was won. The third carving has 2 blacksmiths surrounded by swords, axes, pistols, guns & other implements of war. Encircling the blacksmiths & arms are the words, “WM E BARTLE(TT) BALTIM(ORE MD)”. The later carving was probably added by a relative to commemorate the death of William Bartlett in 1844. The carving is a bit difficult to interpret but appears to read, “Son of Riclcy Reb. Bartlett was born 2nd Mo 24th 1793 first day of week. Went to Dr. H Keld (an honest man) on the 23rd of 6th Mo 1809 was married to Mary L James 11th Mo 20th 1816 [image of goose] 11th mo. 20th 1816 1 mo. 13th 1844 our children Rebecca Jne. Milton Wm. Edmundson Mary. Rich.”. The spout of the horn has turned decoration & just below the spout is an iron loop. CONDITION: the horn body remains solid & the engraving is surprisingly clear & legible. However, the wood plug is gone & there are significant losses to the butt end of the horn affecting some of the circular engravings. Despite the damage, an exceptionally interesting & well engraved horn w/ fascinating folky additions. (02-14966/BF). $500-800.
