WAR DATE AUTOGRAPHED O.O. HOWARD CIVIL WAR LETTER.
WAR DATE AUTOGRAPHED O.O. HOWARD CIVIL WAR LETTER. A 2pp. ALS by O.O. Howard, Maj. Gen. U.S. Army, Dept. of the Tennessee, plus envelope to Lieut. Col. Geo. H. Hildt, 30th OVVI, 1st Brig. 2nd Div. Upper left corner of envelope marked "Private", lower left "Fa__d by Capt. Schaefer." Letter (General Field Orders No. 16) dated Sept. 9, 1864, when Howard was commander of the Dept. of the Army of the Tennessee. The letter congratulates the army "...upon the successful termination of this [Atlanta] campaign." He specifically notes engagements such as Dallas, Jonesboro, Ezra Church, and the Macon R.R. in which the 30th OVI was involved. He also notes "Our rejoicing is tempered, as it allways [sic] must be, by the soldiers sorrow at the loss of his companions in arms....Your trusted & beloved commander fell in your midst -- his name, the name of McPherson, carries with it a peculiar feeling of sorrow...." McPherson was shot by Confederate skirmishers on 22 July 1864 as he was riding from one section of his forces to another. Howard himself was a rather ineffective general, but he was an ardent abolitionist, even before the war. After the war he was appointed the first commissioner of the "Freedmen's Bureau," and instrumental in founding Howard University. Usual folds, ink very light, minor toning of folds. Envelope moderately soiled, open edge frayed. PLEASE NOTE: THIS LOT WILL BE SOLD ON EBAY LIVE AUCTIONS BETWEEN 5:00-6:00pm EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME ON MAY 10, 2002.
