WALTHER NEHRING
(1892 - 1983) German general, an Afrika Korps commander who enveloped the British on the Gazala Line, led the 1st Panzer Army in Silesia, captured by the Russians. Awarded the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Dusseldorf, Sep. 18, 1968, in english. In part: "...I entered the Imperial German Army in 1911...it was a great distinction to serve as an officer...to work nearly but for honor...soldier's instruction and training are carried out in free nature, in the free terrain and not in a office...the profession of a military officer has many careers and therefore it is very interesting. A clever boy is qualified to become a high-class officer...". He also notes his awards and that he was wounded five times. Fine.
