Deputy Grand Master of England, and Provincial Grand Master of Essex, on the 21st day of June, 1899. No printer, publisher, place or date (1899)With 28 actual photographs (8 by 6 inches), unsigned, mounted on card and linen-hinged, 10-leaves text including title-page, printed on one side of the leaf only, oblong 4to, original half morocco, gilt, edges gilt, lettered on upper board "W. Bro. A. J. Monk, / First D. C. No. 2750 / Presented by Bro. James Speller 1st W. M. No. 2750" : binding rubbed and worn and upper board almost loose, light foxing of preliminary leaves, but images and mounts clean Presumably printed in a very limited number : not in COPAC, the BL or WorldCat. The photos include High Bridge Street, Old Cock Inn, Back premises of inn, Queen Eleanor Memorial Cross, Abbey Gateway, Gateway and Church, Harold's Bridge, Old Elm Tree in Church-yard, The Romeland and the market-place, South door of church, Abbey Church West Tower, Denny Monument and effigy of Lady Grevill, Tomb of Capt R. Smith …Harold's Battle-Axe, Ancient Pillory : whipping post : and stocks, West Doorway, Abbey Church, SE exterior, Francis Memorial Screen, Church exterior, Masonic Hall, Cock Hotel, etc. Lodge No.2750 was consecrated in the Lady Chapel of Waltham Abbey by consent of the vicar, the Rev. F.B. Johnston, who was not a Freemason. Legend tells that while the ceremony was in progress he tried to gain admission but found he was unable to enter his own church. It is fairly certain that the Brethren had no legal right to close the Abbey - but they did. Sir Alf Ramsey was a member of the lodge.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) PATERSON ( James ), ed. Paterson (1805-76), antiquary and miscellaneous writer, contributed most of the biographies to Kay's 'Edinburgh Portraits'.
