(1819 - 1892) American poet whose volume of verse Leaves of Grass was initially rejected by the public and cost him his job in the federal government. It was only in his later years that his genius became recognized worldwide. Envelope front panel addressed to himself: "Walt Whitman Solicitor's Office Treasury Washington, D.C." Postmarked from Camden, NJ, with cancellation stamp touching part of signature, some slight mat burn from prior framing, glue stains at right margin, still good condition. With an 8' x 10" b/w photo of Whitman.
