Walpole's Anecdotes of Painting in England, based on materials collected by George Vertue, made a significant contribution to art history. It was reprinted several times over the following century and much valued for its useful biographical information.
Vol. 4 includes Walpole's History of the modern taste of gardening in which he establishes William Kent as the father of English landscape design. The great landscape designer Repton was profoundly influenced by the work. [8]
