Excessively rare, good content war-date L.S. ""W. H. L. Wallace"" as Colonel of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, Fort Donelson, Feb. 17, 1862, just one day after Buckner had surrendered to the massed Union forces before him. Writing a Col. Smith of the 5th Illinois, Wallace asks: ""àsend me a written report of the action of your command in the late operationsàresulting in the capture of Fort Donelson. Give particularly the names & rank of all officers & men killed wounded & missing and note any acts of individual bravery & daring that occurredà"". After a six-day siege, Buckner had asked Grant for surrender terms. Grant replied that his only terms would be ""unconditional surrender"", thereby earning him a nickname for life. Folds, otherwise excellent condition.
