WALKER, LEROY P.
(1817-1884) 1st Confederate Secretary of War. In Sept. 1861 he resigned because of health and was made a brigadier general serving in Alabama and Florida. Extremely rare war-date A.L.S. "L. P. Walker" as Secretary of War, 2pp. 8vo., Montgomery, April 8, 1861, in full: "The bearer, Mr. Glen, is the correspondent of the New York Herald and visits Pensacola professionally, to see and doubtlessly to report what is going on. How far he shall be permitted to know the interim condition of the Forts, is a question which you must determine. I must however say I have every confidence that his sympathies are with us, and at this distance from you, I cannot see any impropriety in granting his request". Unusual content in which the infant Confederacy permits the Northern press to examine its fortifications. Fine condition, nicely matted and framed with an image and brass plaque.
