1929 was a seminal year for Evans. Having returned to New York in 1927 after studying literature at the Sorbonne in Paris and subsequently working
as a clerk on Wall Street, he soon abandoned his employment and began to photograph in earnest, wandering through the city with his small, hand-held camera. This self-portrait hints at the artistic nature and romantic beginnings of the documentary genius. It is the gaze, averted yet focused, that bespeaks his philosophy of art and life: “Stare. It is the way to educate your eye, and more. Stare, pry, listen, eavesdrop. Die knowing something. You are not here long” (Walker Evans, WALKER EVANS SUBWAYS AND STREETS, WASHINGTON, D.C., National Gallery of Art, 1991, p. 100).
