The Indian inhabitants, their features, complexion, &c., their manners, customs, employments, marriages, feasts, hunting, computation, language, &c. With remarkable occurrences in the South-Sea and elsewhere. The second edition. To which are added, the natural history of those parts, by a Fellow of the Royal Society : and Davis's Expedition to the Gold Mines, in 1702. Printed for James Knapton, 1704With folding map and 3 engraved folding plates, pp (15), (1, adverts), 283, (12), (1, adverts), 8vo, full polished calf, gilt bordered sides, fully gilt spine, with label, gilt, yellow edges, "Bound by J. Larkins / for E. W. Stibbs", with bookplate of Florence and Wolfe Sampson : with a short closed tear without loss in margin of one plate and the joints tender, otherwise a very good to nice copy in a fitted, fleece-lined, folding cloth case, gilt lettered spine. "One of the best accounts of the Isthmus of Panama … makes a strong appeal to the English government to establish a settlement… Wafer, an English surgeon, sailed to the West Indies in a trading vessel … deserted in 1679 and joined with Lynch and Cook, celebrated buccaneers, who brought him into contact with William Dampier … gained the confidence and esteem of the indians with his medical skills, and so was able to record much valuable information concerning them … Davis's report, appended to this second edition, is titled 'An expedition of a body of English-men to the Gold Mines of Spanish America, in 1702' … This second edition has a lengthier dedication than the first, this one to John, Duke of Marlborough, as well as an additional page of advertisements." - Hill 1797.ENGLISH PRE 1801; TRAVEL; AMERICA; SOUTH AMERICA; CENTRAL AMERICA; WEST INDIES; ; ; ; ; ;
