Dexter Thorton was born in the state of New York, spending most of his time working on his family farm. Later he worked as a cook and a carpenter at local saw mills. With the money he made he purchased properties along the Seattle waterfront where he established a store. He earned trust among his community - he would then take in other peoples valuables and money and hide them throughout the store, as people worried about thieves. With that, he decided to learn the banking business and move to San Francisco. In 1870 he returned back to Seattle and created the city's first chartered bank called the Dexter Horton Bank. It was chartered under the National Bank Act in 1882 and controlled by the First National Corporation of Seattle Washington. By 1931 the Dexter Horton National Bank changed its name again to the First National Bank of Seattle, then Seattle-First in 1935, then Seafirst in 1974. In 1999, Seafirst Bank merged with Bank of America. Creases throughout, wear along the edges and various stains on the reverse and one dark stain to the right. Good condition.
