Hammeken</B></I></B></I><B>".</B></I> 1 page, 8" x 12.5", Austinia, Republic of Texas, March 18, 1839 being a deed acknowledging the payment of $100 by George Fisher for five shares of stock of the Brazos and Galveston Railroad Company. The document reads in small part: "<I>Know all Men by these Presents: That we, William J. Bryan and George L. Hammeken, for and in consideration of One Hundred Dollars, paid by George Fisher to James F. Perry and George L. Hammeken Commissioners appointed for receiving subscriptions to the capital stock of the Brazos and Galveston Rail Road Company...Do..Convey...the following property, lying...in the village of Austinia, on Galveston Bay..."</B></I> Apparently a lot in the town of Austinia was conveyed to each subscriber for five shares of the capital stock of the railroad. William J. Bryan was a nephew of Stephen F. Austin and a brother of Moses Austin Bryan. Hammeken was a close friend of Austin's and active in enterprises such as this railroad, of which he was the president. He was the translator of Filisola's <I>Evacuation of Texas</B></I>.
