<td width="100%">
Unique cast iron with light gold finish,was made by the W. H.Howell Company in Geneva,Illinois. Mr. Howell specialized in producing sad irons (1830-1880),the heavy 10 pound metal irons used to iron wrinkles out of clothing. Sold in sets of two,one to use one to keep on the fire while the other was in use. The term sad was an old English term meaning heavy. Men such as Mr. Howell were their own entrepreneurs,applied for their own patents and did their own advertising to name a few.The cast iron furniture came about after the electric iron took over the sad iron business.These benches were made as reproductions of much earlier European wood caved ones at a lesser price as stated in their catalogs of the time. The name of the company,location and "930 Patent applied For" appears on the inside of each leg. Originally the legs were to be set inside the seat as can be seen by the holes and leg impression on the underside of the hard wood bottom. Evidently he decided they looked better on the outside. The bench is covered in a very good and old imitation deep red alligator fabric which looks and feels much like leather. The original fabric peeks out of this on the underside as well as the black pellon. Two small streaks of either wear or brushing against something have left a lighter color., The fabric is seamed at different angles creating a design of its' own. The bench is in excellent condition. Measures 18L X 24H X 12W.
