ALS signed “The great man,” three onionskin pages, 8.5 x 11, no date. Letter to his mistress Carlotta Douglas. In part: “This letter will probably be flown over your head, pass you at Pittsburg [sic], and arrive in N.Y. before you…Miss Doll called again tonight and I had Joe tell her I had gone to Arazona [sic] for lung trouble. She said ‘If you hear from him ask him how I go about getting into moving pictures.’ A lug!…Dr. Dodge informed me Miss Millevere…had tossed the cookies on the way home. Couldn’t stand the excitement I suppose. You remember she was the nurse that used to rum my fingers at night at the sanatarium. I was officially informed today Uncle Whiskers will clapp me in the clink, if I do not segregate myself from fifty six grand back taxes. I shall defy him in the a.m.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and a few spots of soiling. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope postmarked July 25, 1939. Great peek into the mind and personal affairs of the legendary actor.
