ALS signed “The great man,” one page both sides, 8.75 x 11, October 20, 1940. Letter to his mistress Carlotta Monti. In part: “I am sitting up in my office—99 in the shade…and I am inguritating [sic] a cold rum and pineapple juice reading the L.A. Times and looking at pictures of snow covered landscape…and feel sorry for you poor easterners at this time of year…What will happen ‘when winter comes?’…You will be proud of Evelyn when you see her in the picture Universal has the idea of starring her all over again. Bill Wolf and George Moran also show to fine advantage. They too wanted you to handle them but I told them you had gone opera singers. We finish the picture Wednesday. I am so tired I could cash in right now. I will go to Soboba or some other hot springs as soon as possible there after.” In fine condition, with central horizontal and vertical fold, and some scattered light toning. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Fields’s hand. ‘The Bank Dick’ is considered a classic of Fields’s work, incorporating his usual personna as a charming drunken husband with a shrewish wife. The film was written by Fields, under the alias Mahatma Kane Jeeves (‘My hat, my cane, Jeeves!’).
